About the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble

The Hot Springs Flute Ensemble is an intergeneration flute choir composed of 30+ members performing on a variety of flutes of the flute family including C, alto, bass, and piccolos.

The HSFE is a registered non-profit organization in the state of Arkansas and is affiliated with National Park Community College and the National Flute Association.

The ensemble performs in a variety of venues including churches, weddings and receptions, retirement communities, public concerts and annually at Christmas in the lobby of the Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The ensemble rehearses and performs during the Fall and Spring Semesters of NPCC, and other times on request.

All members are volunteer performers and pay registration each semester at NPCC.  The ensemble rehearses on alternate Tuesdays at the Church at Crossgate Center, 3100 East Grand Avenue, Hot Springs, Arkansas.

 

About Our Music Director

 

Dr. Jackie Flowers

Jackie Flowers leads an extremely active career as a flutist, teacher, registered nurse and music director of the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble.
 
As a flutist, Dr. Flowers has performed with Symphony Orchestras throughout the country, including the McKeesport & Pittsburgh Symphonies, Long Beach & Orange County Doctor's Symphony, Bellflower Symphony, Napa Symphony, Baroque Sinfonia of Santa Rosa, S. Arkansas Symphony and Pine Bluff Symphony. In the summer of 1970, Flowers toured Israel, Greece & Turkey as flute soloist with the Los Angeles Doctor's Symphony.
 
As a teacher, Flowers maintains a private music studio for instruction of modern & Baroque flutes, piano & harpsichord. She taught in the nursing program at National Park Community College for 4 years, and has been a flute instructor there since 1983. She is adjunct faculty at Ouachita Technical College, and has been flute instructor at Ouachita Baptist University. She is flute instructor in The New Horizon's Band, and presented a workshop on teaching beginning adult flutists for the National Flute Association. The Flutist Quarterly published her article on "The Spy Flute".
 
As a registered nurse, Flowers graduated from the McKeesport (PA) Hospital School of Nursing (associated with Penn State University), attended the University of Pittsburgh, graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga (CA), Sonoma State University, and Columbia Pacific University.  She holds a Ph.D. in Nursing Administration and Gerontology and has an additional MA in Music.  She is Nationally Certified as a gerontological nurse, and is a part-time nursing supervisor.
 
Dr. Flowers organized the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble in 1982, after moving to Arkansas. She also performs with the Hot Springs Baroque Ensemble and the Hot Springs Concert Band.

 

 

 

About Our Conductor

 

Julian Herring

Julian Herring, conductor of the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble since 2001, is a retired band director with 35 years experience in the public schools of Arkansas and Florida. Subsequently, he served as adjunct instructor of horn for Ouachita Baptist University and the University of Central Arkansas, as well as assisting with teaching interns for Henderson State University.

A lifelong participant in community music, Mr. Herring also serves as associate conductor of the Hot Springs Concert Band, instructor of the Hot Springs Horns, and was the founding director of the New Horizons Band of Hot Springs, a teaching band for adults. 

As a performer, he is a member of the Hot Springs Brass (brass quintet), the High Point Brass (brass trio), and participates as soloist or ensemble member for other community organizations.

A native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Mr. Herring received his early musical training under the baton of the renowned R.B. “Scrubby” Watson.  He holds degrees from Hendrix College (BA) and the University of Illinois (MA). Teachers include, Ashley Coffman, Mark Hindsley, and Thomas Holden. Now a member of the International Horn Society, he was active in the American School Band Directors’ Association, Phi Beta Mu, and served as both president and parliamentarian of the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association.
